| Boxe Francaise Savate, or "Savate" is one of the few surviving western martial arts in existence today. Like many martial arts, it's history is a little controversial, but we do know that Savate was formalized in 1820. It was originally developed and practiced by Parisian street fighters and "thugs" to protect themselves. It originally used all parts of the body to attack with, hands, feet, elbows, knees, headbutts, fingers in the eyes, hair pulls, throws, grappling and weapons. It was later refined by masters who wanted to attract members of the nobility as clients and students. As the techniques were refined over time, Savate became a highly efficient sport and method of self-defense. |

Today, Savate is seeing great popularity around the world as one of the most prominent styles of kickboxing in the world. Although it uses many of the same techniques that other styles do, it has a distinct flavor and method that makes it very unique. Savate is known for it's elusiveness and speed as well as extremely deceptive techniques that keep the opponent guessing as to what is coming next. It is a style of expert precision. Savate, which literally means 'shoe' or 'boot', is the only kickboxing style that uses shoes in the ring. The shoe becomes a 'weapon' for the fighter to use against his opponent. In sport, we use a soft shoe that doesn't cause as much damage as a real boot or something similar. But, in the street, the use of a real shoe makes all the difference in the world. Contrast this to most martial arts that practice barefoot and it is easy to see why Savate is an excellent choice for self-defense. |
